RIDE-TO-REMEMBER IX – RIDING FOR FALLEN WORCESTER MA. FIREFIGHTERS
On Saturday October 9, 2021 the Springfield “Ride-to-Remember” will be welcoming all bicycle riders to join members of the Law Enforcement, Firefighter, Corrections Officer and EMT community for the Ninth Annual Ride-To-Remember charity bicycle ride that traditionally goes from Springfield to Boston, MA.
This year we are dedicating the Ride-to-Remember to the nine Fallen Worcester Firefighters who died in the line-of-duty these past two decades. On December 9’th 1999 the WFD lost the following six Firefighters in the Worcester Cold Storage fire; Lt. James Lyons, Lt. Timothy Jackson, Thomas Spencer, Paul Brotherton, Jeremiah Lucey and Joeseph McGuirk. Eight years ago they lost Firefighter John Davies in a three decker fire. One year ago they lost Firefighter Christopher Roy in a House Fire. On November 13’th, 2019 Lt. Jason Menard lost his life fighting a house fire and saving a fellow Firefighter.
No other Fire Department in New England has suffered such a loss and the Ride-to-Remember wants to dedicate this years ride to the fallen heroes of the Worcester Fire Department.
The Ride-to-Remember for this year only, will change the route so we can spotlight the City of Worcester, the Worcester Firefighters and the families of these brave men who suffer their loss every single day. Money raised will go the Worcester Fire Department charities.
The Ride-to-Remember VIII will start in downtown Springfield on October 9th, 2021 at 7:00 A.M. The 400-500 bicycle riders will be escorted by Police Motorcycle Officers to the City of Worcester which is 50 miles away. We will reach Worcester city limits and be escorted by a fleet of Worcester fire trucks and police to Institute Park where riders will be greeted by State Officials, the Mayor of Worcester along with Fire Chief, Firefighters and their families. This will be our lunch stop and there will be a short ceremony honoring the nine fallen firefighters. After the half-hour to 45 minute ceremony all riders will follow our motorcycle escort in a loop back to Main & Boland Way in downtown Springfield.
